It is a personal decision whether or not to provide a progam to your guests when they arrive.
Many families choose to do this when they have a number of non-Jewish guests who many need a program to enhance their understanding of the service and the meaning of the rite of passage.
Other families like to create a program to help participating guests follow B'nai Tikvah's structure of the service, or to thank people for their involvement.
In any event, a program may be a nice, decorative keepsake to create for your family simcha.
(Please do not carry them out of the synagogue on Shabbat!)
We have gathered a few examples of programs that were created.
Also, some clip art collections are noted for your reference.
Have fun with this!

Directions

Most of us know how to use a computer slightly, and do not have to spend any money for printing and design. Any number of software applications can be used to create a simple layout for your Program. The easiest to use are software that provide wizzards for creating a 4 page brochure, such as Microsoft Publisher. However, you can easily create your copy in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or something else. |
Cover page
|
Typical things to include:
- Name of Bar/Batmizvah
- Date of event
- Name of B'nail Tikvah
- Names of Rabbi and Cantor
|
Usually there is some type of decoration on the front cover,
such as a Torah scroll or Star of David.

Center pages

Generally people give some personal comment about the Bar or Bat Mitzvah child's accomplishment,
and thank those who have helped him/her along the way.
As well, a brief description of the parsha or the elements of the service may be given.
You could refer to the Glossary for definitions of religious terms. |
Back cover
|
This may be a good place to list who is receiving honors and aliyot.
It helps people recall their assignment, and identifies them to the other guests and members of the congregation. |
Number of copies
|
Figure on making enough copies for your guests plus about 50 general members of the congregation. You can provide the synagogue office with a basket in which to display the programs, but be sure to deliver them by 1:00 on Friday. They cannot be removed until after Shabbat.
