In light of some of the problems we've
had with our e-mail communications,
this page should provide some insight.

Types of Email Accounts
  • POP. Most ISPs, such as Comcast, Verizon, Earthlink, etc. offer their users one or more POP email accounts. A POP account allows you to receive email using any program that supports POP. There are dozens of such programs, such as, Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc. These programs typically access your ISPs mail server and downlod the messages to your local computer. The advanced settings of most programs allow you to keep copies of your messages on the ISP's server but, this is not encouraged because POP servers typically do not provide much permanent disk storage.

  • Web Based email is accessed through an internet web browser such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Opera, etc. The advantage is that the computer you use does not have to be configured in any special way and the messages remain on the server until you specifically delete them. This is very convenient for people who travel and borrow other people's computers.

  • Other Some ISP's, such as Optimum Online and Verizon, provide both POP and Webmail access for thir customers. AOL requires special software for their propietary mail system and now also offers web based access.
  • Q. What is Univox?
Univox Internet, Inc. is an internet service company that provides B'nai Tikvah with services to host our website. They are not an ISP. i.e They do not provide the means for us to connect to the internet but they do provide us with two important e-mail services...
    1. Additional POP accounts
Optimum Online only provides us with a few POP accounts which we use for the Synagogue Office, Rabbi, Administrator, and Cantor. Univox provides additional accounts for the Nursery School, Religious School, and others.

    2. Email Aliases
An alias is simply an email "name" @bnaitikvah.org which is associated with some other POP or Web Based email account as a destination. Univox allows a single alias, such as Hakol@bnaitikvah.org to be associated with more than one destination.

    SPAM blocking
Most ISP's emply the services of a SPAM filtering organization such as Spamhaus and CBL to "protect" their customers from receiving an excess amount of unwanted traffic.

Although I emply a variety of techniques to keep B'nai Tikvah's mail away from email harvestors and spam artists, there are some things beyond my control, such as worms and viruses that infect the machines of our congregants. Some spammers have taken great pains to manually target our users through various means.

Optimum Online only provides us with a few POP accounts which we use for the Synagogue Office, Rabbi, Administrator, and Cantor. Univox provides additional accounts for the Nursery School, Religious School, Programming Director and others.
