The Rabbi’s Desk

This is how Rabbi Levi Yitzhak expounded the verse in the Scriptures: “Remember what Amalek did unto thee.”

Because you are a man, you first are permitted to remember what the power of evil has done to you. But when you ascend to the rung of the zaddikim, and your heart has rest from all your enemies round about, then you will “blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under Heaven,” and will remember only what the power of evil has done to Heaven: how it set up a wall between G-d and Israel, and drove into exile the Divine Presence.
